It was the 15th anniversary of a German Open in the 5.5m Class after the restart of the class in Germany in 2001. Here again, Oliver Berking and the Flensburger Segel Club invited the class for a perfect organized regatta – on the race course as well as on shore!
Thirty one teams from NED, GER, SUI, NOR, SWE, AUT and UAE registered for the championship. Steady winds with strong gusts up to 7 Bft. on day 1 for perfect sailing conditions – only some minor damages. The starts were very close with some of the evolution boats sailing between the modern ones. After two races Stradivarius (GER 91) took the lead in front of My shout and Shaolin (SUI 226).
The first evening was the opening party at Kai Wohlenbergs „ship-yard“, together with the other participants of the Robbe & Berking Sterling Cup Regatta – fifteen 12m Yachts crews and another thirty four in the Dragon Class.
On a sunny and warm day 2 with all the boats on the starting line again, only one race was sailed in light wind and tricky conditions. Team Stradivarius was still leading the fleet, followed by Dutches of B (NED 31) and Marie Francoise (SUI 222).
Three races took place on day 3. Tommy Müller and his crew aboard Sinewave (GER 82) did a constant series and finished on first place overall.
Sunday (day 4) racing was cancelled, because of a total lack of wind. Tommy Müller (GER 83) therefore kept his overall first place, followed by Jürg Menzi (SUI 222) and Donald Lippert (GER 91).
It was a great event for about a hundred 5.5 sailors and their families and shore teams. Arend Pasman und Hans Köster, respectively National 5.5m Class Association Presidents for the Netherlands and Germany, discussed the new edition of the Dutch and German Open in 2016 in Medemblik.
