Friday was another epic day with three solid races. After a pretty consistent day with a 1,3,3 BAH 21 takes the overall lead from NOR 57 and SUI 228, who won the second and third races.
Fabulous race organization started precisely on time with wind conditions typical for Torbole with 15-18 knots and more wind on the left hand side of the course.
Race one was a duel between NOR 57 and BAH 21 going hard to the left and the rest of the fleet right on their back.
BAH21 maintained a super lane and rounded the top mark first and never gave up their lead.
Races 2 and 3 were very much the same. NOR57 and BAH21 going left to the rocks and SUI214, SUI228 with BAH22 sailing more to the middle of the lake to look very, very good at certain points.
Despite the pin end being favoured, Race 3 saw three OCS unfortunately due to a pileup by the committee boat. So GER83, SUI201 and NED26 were out.
One of the newest boats in the 5.5 fleet, Martin Cross, from Australia, had an eventful day.
He recalls, “A very exciting day. We are still trying to learn how to sail the boat. It’s very new to us with a new boat. I have two new crew who have never sailed in one before. So we have a huge learning curve.”
“We have out moments when we get right and then we have our moments when we are not quite so good an efficient. A lot of sequencing is required to do things in the right order and we are still learning how to do it. We did actually manage to fill the boat up today on a wave, which was quite exciting, when the boat is full of water, but luckily there are lots of bilge pumps in the Wilke and it emptied pretty quickly.”
“But a great day on the water; thoroughly enjoyed it.”
After a good day of racing the fleet were welcomed back to the Circolo Vela Torbole with white wine and pasta ready. What joy.
The Alpen Cup concludes Saturday with two more races.
